According to Michigan State Police, the initial power line was handled; however, further down, a tree broke, causing a powerline to collapse and electrocute Quillen.

Jim DeGroff, the Paw Paw Fire Department chief, said Quillen has worked for the organization since 2019.

DeGroff described him as a superb fireman and a personal friend of the department and chief during an emotional phone interview with News Channel 3.

According to authorities, the incident occurred in Van Buren County at Red Arrow Highway and 30th Street around 6:30 pm.

The Paw Paw Fire Department said that Quillen was transferred to Bronson Hospital, where he passed away.

Quillen did nothing wrong. He was standing close by when a limb fell onto the line, according to Michigan State Police.

On John Street on Wednesday night, officials lined up to honor Quillen’s life. On Thursday, a memorial was erected before the Paw Paw Fire Department.

On Thursday, Quillen’s friends and family gathered at the memorial to lay flowers near his boots, cap, and jacket, which is folded and bears his name.

Thursday morning’s ice storm rendered over 200,000 Consumers Energy customers powerless.

DeGroff confirmed the deceased firefighter’s identification on Thursday morning. According to state Police, Quillen is survived by his wife and little child. According to Fire officials, he was a U.S. Marine.
