Costco Raises Prices of Two Popular Food Court Items

Ah, the Costco Food Court. It might be the last place on earth you can get an entire meal for under two dollars. One day, the children of the future will be amazed to hear that us old folks once “drove” to some place called “Costco” and got a hot dog combo for $1.50. I’m calling it right now that that will be the 2060 version of “In my day, I went down to the corner store and paid a penny for a root beer float, a giant lollipop, and a brand new car.” And while the price of Costco’s beloved hot dog combo is not changing (yet), we can say goodbye to the low, low prices of their sodas and their chicken bake.

Okay, not exactly. I mean, they are still pretty cheap. But it’s the principle of the thing! The price of the chicken bake, which is basically chicken and cheese stuffed in a pastry crust, went up from $2.99 to $3.99, while the 20-ounce soda price went from $0.59 to $0.69, Food & Wine reports. Now, this may not seem like a very large leap in dollars, but percentage-wise, that’s a 33.4% and 17% price hike respectively. If you’re an occasional Costco diner, this probably won’t affect you at all. But if you are one of those people who stops at Costco every day for a soda and a chicken bake, then you are going to be paying about $400 more this year—and that’s not insignificant.

I know, all that really matters is that Costco’s famously cheap hot dog stays the same price. And fortunately, according to a Costco senior vice president, when it comes to the hot dog, they “have no plans to increase the price at this time.” Phew! I need at least one story about cheap food to tell to my future grandkids, otherwise, I don’t think the D.G. (Department of Grandmas) will grant me my grandma’s license, and then what’ll I do?
